In December 2019, The Washington Post reported that the US Justice Department was investigating whether Sci-Hub founder Alexandra Elbakyan had links with Russian intelligence, in part due to the suspicion that tacit approval or assistance of the Russians is required for an operation of the scale of Sci-Hub. [29] Sweden [ edit ] I maintain that if you subtract state piracy in China and proxy Sci-Hub activity in Iran, the majority of Sci-Hub activity, as seen on the map linked to above, can be found amongst individual scholars in Western countries and not individuals in the developing world. It’s an unsubstantiated claim, backed up by evidence such as the usage map. I invite anyone to refute it.

Sci-Hub has cycled through domain names, some of which have been blocked by domain registry operators. [2] Sci-Hub remained reachable via alternative domains such as .io, [2] then .cc, and .bz. [15] Sci-Hub has also been accessible at times by directly entering the IP address, or through a .onion Tor Hidden Service.

I feel exactly the same way as the author, that scientific publishing should not be a for profit endeavour, and echo his first statement "I’m passionately in favour of everyone having open access to the results of the scientific research that their taxes pay for"

The State of OA study ascertained the accessibility status of each DOI in each collection using oaDOI ( Piwowar et al., 2018; Piwowar et al., 2017). Articles for which oaDOI did not identify a fulltext were considered “closed”. Otherwise, articles were assigned a color/status of bronze, green, hybrid, or gold. oaDOI classifies articles not available from their publisher’s site as either green or closed. The version of oaDOI used in the State of OA study identified green articles by searching PubMed Central and BASE. Readers should note that this implementation likely undercounts green articles, especially if considering articles available from academic social networks as green. • Gnutella2

Pierre Curie Publishers have alleged that Sci-Hub relies on phishing emails to trick researchers, for example by having them log in at fake journal websites. “I cannot confirm the exact source of the credentials,” Elbakyan told me, “but can confirm that I did not send any phishing emails myself.”

Thank you Gabriel for putting some common sense in – and providing figures that show more than 50% of downloads are NOT from Western countries. Thank you also Gabriel for providing some insight into user motivations. The map is far less useful in presentation terms, and possibly disagrees with Gabriel’s figures, so at minimum the claim that the majority of Sci-Hub usage is from Western countries is controversial. . Apologies to Frank for putting words in his mouth, He indeed said the majority of usage of Sci-Hub was by Westerners for a “pseudo revolutionary lark” – but without providing any evidence of that particular motivation claim. Frank, you will see that I have no problems at all about apologising when I make a mistake. How about you now apologising for making a claim for which you have no supporting evidence? • Internet Archive

Since 2015, many publishers, including ACS and Elsevier, have pushed their STM voluntary principles for article sharing: a series of rules for researchers and networking sites for scientists on how they can share their research. More recently, at least nine of the largest publishers are actively promoting howcanishareit.com as the go-to reference for scientists looking to learn about publishers’ rules on how they can share their research. • OpenCitations 2017a. Academic/scholarly The website Sci-Hub enables users to download PDF versions of scholarly articles, including many articles that are paywalled at their journal’s site. Sci-Hub has grown rapidly since its creation in 2011, but the extent of its coverage has been unclear. Here we report that, as of March 2017, Sci-Hub’s database contains 68.9% of the 81.6 million scholarly articles registered with Crossref and 85.1% of articles published in toll access journals. We find that coverage varies by discipline and publisher, and that Sci-Hub preferentially covers popular, paywalled content. For toll access articles, we find that Sci-Hub provides greater coverage than the University of Pennsylvania, a major research university in the United States. Green open access to toll access articles via licit services, on the other hand, remains quite limited. Our interactive browser at https://greenelab.github.io/scihub allows users to explore these findings in more detail. For the first time, nearly all scholarly literature is available gratis to anyone with an Internet connection, suggesting the toll access business model may become unsustainable. https://doi.org/10.7554/eLife.32822.001 Introduction

In May 2015, Stephen Leeder was removed from his role as editor of the Medical Journal of Australia after its publisher decided to outsource the journal's production to Elsevier. As a consequence, all but one of the journal's editorial advisory committee members co-signed a letter of resignation. [79] • 2 Equity

(2) Malamud says that where he got the articles from shouldn’t matter anyway. The data mining, he says, is non-consumptive: a technical term meaning that researchers don’t read or display large portions of the works they are analysing. “You cannot punch in a DOI [article identifier] and pull out the article,” he says. Malamud argues that it is legally permissible to do such mining on copyrighted content in countries such as the United States. In 2015, for instance, a US court cleared Google Books of copyright infringement charges after it did something similar to the JNU depot: scanning thousands of copyrighted books without buying the rights to do so, and displaying snippets from these books as part of its search service, but not allowing them to be downloaded or read in their entirety by a human.
