What role do unconscious biases play in how we make decisions when we buy, think, vote, judge and convict? What we don’t know about what we believes shapes much more about our lives and our actions than we realize. The author does a great job of educating readers about the role of unconscious bias in a page-turning, interesting way. • form class

• Coronavirus We defined a comprehensive set of scholarly publishing venues, referred to as “journals”, based on the Scopus database. In reality, these include conferences with proceedings as well as book series. For inclusion in this analysis, each required an ISSN and at least one article as part of the Crossref-derived catalog of scholarly literature. Accordingly, our catalog consisted of 23,037 journals encompassing 56,755,671 articles. Of these journals, 4,598 (20.0%) were inactive (i.e. no longer publishing articles), and 2,933 were open access (12.7%). Only 70 journals were inactive and also open access.

bump version to 4.0.0 In the United States and Europe, Sci-Hub users concentrate where academic researchers are working. Over the 6-month period, 74,000 download requests came from IP addresses in New York City, home to multiple universities and scientific institutions. There were 19,000 download requests from Columbus, a city with less than a tenth of New York’s population, and 68,000 from East Lansing, Michigan, which has less than a hundredth. These are the homes of Ohio State University and Michigan State University (MSU), respectively.

But, in looking all of this over, it seems like an unfortunate legacy of the copyright system that is props up the broken model of expensive, obsolete, inefficient and poorly vetted journals, while outlawing the efficient, cheap and useful model of an online library of knowledge like Sci-Hub. Once you have an idea of what you want to write about in your research paper, make sure your topic is neither broad or narrow. If the research paper topic is too narrow, you might hardly find the appropriate literature. In-depth themes provide too many sources. Scientific research, manuscript writing, editing and peer-review is all done by scientists and professors. This is all mostly funded by the taxpayers. Now, publishers take care of manuscript layout and web hosting. For this last piece of work, everyone needs to pay exorbitant amounts of money. The publishing industry is strongly inefficient and opaque. Universities negotiate subscription prices which are often unknown to the public due to confidentiality. This is again paid by the taxpayer. Now we as ACS members need to pay again with our fees to support some ridiculous lawsuit whose resolution will not be able to be enforced. This is total nonsense and such an important action should require approval by a majority of ACS members. I did not expect this from a theoretically democratic and non-profit organization. All my support to Sci-Hub for its key contribution to science (key even in a rich European country where I work). Publishers should stop complaining and start evolving. We need more transparency, not more greed.

96.58% In June 2017, the American Chemical Society (ACS) filed a lawsuit against Sci-Hub in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, alleging copyright and trademark infringement; it sought judgment US$4.8 million from Sci-Hub in damages, and Internet service provider blocking of the Sci-Hub website. [24] On 6 November 2017, the ACS was granted a default judgment, and a permanent injunction was granted against all parties in active concert or participation with Sci-Hub that has notice of the injunction, "including any Internet search engines, web hosting and Internet service providers, domain name registrars, and domain name registries", to cease facilitating access to the service. [6] [25] On 23 November 2017, four Sci-Hub domains had been rendered inactive by the court order [26] and its CloudFlare account was terminated. [27]

Charles Oppenheim was until 2009 Professor of Information Science and Head of the Department of Information Science at Loughborough University. He is currently a Visiting Professor at two UK universities. He also worked for many years in the electronic publishing industry, primarily dealing with contracts and licensing. He is now a consultant. His principal areas of consultancy are intellectual property rights, scholarly publishing, and data protection. The figure shows the number of articles in LibGen scimag, according to its TimeAdded field, for two database dumps. The number of articles added per day for the January 1, 2014 LibGen database dump was provided by Cabanac and corresponds to Figure 1 of ( Cabanac, 2016). Notice the major discrepancy whereby articles from the April 7, 2017 database dump were added at later dates. Accordingly, we hypothesize that the TimeAdded field is replaced upon modification, making it impossible to assess date of first upload. Sci-Hub’s catalog of articles Request a detailed protocol

In the first version of this study ( Himmelstein et al., 2017a), we mistakenly treated the log events as requests rather than downloads. Fortunately, Sci-Hub reviewed the preprint in a series of tweets, and pointed out the error, stating “in Sci-Hub access logs released previous year, all requests are resolved requests, i.e. user successfully downloaded PDF with that DOI … unresolved requests are not saved”. Interestingly however, 198,600 access events from the logs pointed to DOIs that were not in Sci-Hub’s subsequent DOI catalog. 99.1% of these events — corresponding to DOIs logged as accessed despite later being absent from Sci-Hub — were for book chapters. Upon further investigation, we identified several DOIs in this category that Sci-Hub redirected to LibGen book records as of September 2017. The LibGen landing pages were for the entire books, which contained the queried chapters, and were part of LibGen’s book (not scimag) collection. The explanation that Sci-Hub outsources some book access to LibGen (and logged such requests as accessed) is corroborated by Elbakyan’s statement that ( Elbakyan, 2017): “Currently, the Sci-Hub does not store books, for books users are redirected to LibGen, but not for research papers. In future, I also want to expand the Sci-Hub repository and add books too.” Nonetheless, Sci-Hub’s catalog contains 72.4% of the 510,760 distinct book chapters that were accessed according to the logs. Therefore, on a chapter-by-chapter basis, Sci-Hub does already possess many of the requested scholarly books available from LibGen. • istiklal caddesi'nin cazibesini kaybetme sebepleri 185

Great lesson. Keep up ! Education (Latin educere, to lead or draw out) is the systematic development and cultivation of the mind and other natural powers. " Education is the harmonious development of all our faculties. It begins in the nursery, and goes on at school, but does not end there. It continues through life, whether we will or not.... 'Every person,' says Gibbon, 'has two educations, one which he receives from others, and one more important, which he gives himself.'" John Lubbock The Use of Life ch. vii, p. 111. [ Macmillan & Co. '94.] Instruction, the impartation of knowledge by others (Latin instruere, to build in or into) is but a part of education, often the smallest part. Teaching is the more familiar and less formal word for instruction. Training refers not merely to the impartation of knowledge, but to the exercising of one in actions with the design to form habits. Discipline is systematic and rigorous training, with the idea of subjection to authority and perhaps of punishment. Tuition is the technical term for teaching as the business of an instructor or as in the routine of a school; tuition is narrower than teaching, not, like the latter word, including training. Study is emphatically what one does for himself. We speak of the teaching, training, or discipline, but not of the education or tuition of a dog or a horse. Breeding and nurture include teaching and training, especially as directed by and dependent upon home life and personal association; breeding having reference largely to manners with such qualities as are deemed distinctively characteristic of high birth; nurture (literally nourishing) having more direct reference to moral qualities, not overlooking the physical and mental. Knowledge and learning tell nothing of mental development apart from the capacity to acquire and remember, and nothing whatever of that moral development which is included in education in its fullest and noblest sense; learning, too, may be acquired by one's unaided industry, but any full education must be the result in great part of instruction, training, and personal association. Study is emphatically what one does for himself, and in which instruction and tuition can only point the way, encourage the student to advance, and remove obstacles; vigorous, persevering study is one of the best elements of training. Study is also used in the sense of the thing studied, a subject to be mastered by study, a studious pursuit. Compare KNOWLEDGE; REFINEMENT; WISDOM.

• Create a collection The costs involved in the peer-review process, even with the reviewers and many of the editors working for free, are far higher than the average author ever even considers. All those wonderful internet-based manuscript submission and peer-review systems that have so resoundingly reduced postage expenses and lag times for review for the authors cost serious money. Running papers through iThenticate to ensure that the authors are not plagiarizing someone else’s research and/or writing costs serious money. Paying for the technical infrastructure to host the published papers that SciHub then steals costs serious money. Doing the marketing and outreach to promote the published papers costs money. The average scholarly archival journal is a multi-million dollar annual effort. Add in the expense involved in organizing the meetings at which many published papers are first presented and you start to understand why so many journals are operated by non-profits.
