The dynamics is calcd. by canonical variational theory with optimized multidimensional tunneling contributions, and the formalism allows for Boltzmann averaging over an ensemble of reactant and transition state conformations. In the first stage of the calcns., we assume that the generalized transition states can be well described by a single progress coordinate expressed in primary-zone internal coordinates; in subsequent steps, the transmission coeff. is averaged over a set of primary-zone reaction paths that depend on the protein configuration, and each reaction path has its own reaction coordinate and optimized tunneling path. We also present a simpler approxn. to the transmission coeff. that is called the static secondary-zone (SSZ) approxn. We illustrate both versions of this method by carrying out calcns. of the reaction rate consts. and kinetic isotope effects for oxidn. of benzyl alcoholate to benzaldehyde by horse liver alc. dehydrogenase. The potential energy surface is modeled by a combined generalized hybrid orbital/quantum mech./mol. mech./semiempirical valence bond (GHO-QM/MM/SEVB) method. The multidimensional tunneling calcns. are microcanonically optimized by employing both the small-curvature tunneling approxn. and version 4 of the large-curvature tunneling approxn. We find that the variation of the protein mean force as a function of reaction coordinate is quant. significant, but it does not change the qual. conclusions for the present reaction. We obtain good agreement with expt. for both kinetic isotope effects and Swain-Schaad exponents.

Sometimes I think the book predisposed me to tangle with authority, and made me think that all authority was a joke founded upon pretense. (It’s not?) But even though the book shaped me from a young age, the way I think about it changed, somewhat abruptly, about a dozen years ago.

Three practical methods for computing sums and densities of states of fully coupled anharmonic vibrations are compared. All three methods are based on the std. perturbation theory expansion for the vibrational energy. The accuracy of the perturbation theory expansion is tested by comparisons with computed eigenvalues and/or exptl. vibrational consts. taken from the literature for three- and four-atom mols. For a no. of examples, it is shown that the Xij terms in the perturbation theory expansion account for most of the anharmonicity, and the Yijk terms also make a small contribution; contributions from the Zijkl terms are insignificant. For mols. contg. up to ∼4 atoms, the sums and densities of states can be computed by using nested DO-loops, but this method becomes impractical for larger species. An efficient Monte Carlo method published previously is both accurate and practical for mols. contg. 3-6 atoms but becomes too slow for larger species. The Wang-Landau algorithm is shown to be practical and reasonably accurate for mols. contg. ∼4 or more atoms, where the practical size limit (with a single computer processor) is currently on the order of perhaps 50 atoms. The errors depend mostly on the av. no. of stochastic samples per energy bin. An automated version of the Wang-Landau algorithm is described. Also described are the effects of Fermi resonances and procedures for de-perturbation of the anharmonicity coeffs. Computer codes based on all three algorithms are available from the authors and can also be downloaded freely from the Internet (http://aoss.engin.umich.edu/multiwell/). • Periodic Table
