Prunella Scales I’m revisiting this thread because of the email notifications I had to say how many more comments there are on it. I’m amazed at the interest and passion here over what seems to be a really mundane question. How long should your novel be? As long as it takes to succinctly tell your story. How long do publishers think your novel should be? Somewhere between 70,000 and 90,000 words. Unless they think your 40k or 500k masterpiece is so good they’ll miss out by not publishing it. That’s it.

Lizzie is known for being different than the other women in the story. She would rather be outside exploring and reading books, than staying inside sewing and cooking. Her love of the outdoors translates to her fashion sense, as she mainly wears earth tones (browns, greens, and blues) and loose-fitting dresses. Scout is a young girl whose father, Atticus, is a small-town lawyer defending a black man accused of raping a white girl. The book is set in Alabama in the 1930s and although one of the major themes of the book is racism, it also tackles the issue of how children view the world and how their understanding of the society they live in changes and develops.

Next let’s look at outerwear. The Bennet sisters generally wear spencers, a short, waist-length jacket. These are very much of the period, except that they too sometimes have a low neckline, which generally catches my eye as “wrong.” However, I did some poking around and found at least one Regency fashion plate showing a low-necked walking dress (below), so my eye is clearly (somewhat) wrong! • FAQ

But there’s an off-putting cuteness toward the end of some of the most acclaimed short-run dramas, a sudden-onset finale instinct to wrap everything up on a good note. The first True Detective pondered the void for eight episodes, then decided that light was winning. Every Fargo bends to the warming glow (and moral authority) of an all-American cop-parent family. It is widely believed that Harper Lee based the character of Atticus Finch on her father, Amasa Coleman Lee, a compassionate and dedicated lawyer. The plot of To Kill a Mockingbird was reportedly inspired in part by his unsuccessful defense of two African American men—a father and a son—accused of murdering a white storekeeper. The fictional character of Charles Baker (“Dill”) Harris also has a real-life counterpart. Dill is based on the author Truman Capote, Lee’s childhood friend and next-door neighbour in Monroeville, Alabama. (After the spectacular success of To Kill a Mockingbird, some speculated that Capote was the actual author of Lee’s work. This rumour was not put to rest until 2006.) There is some anecdotal evidence that the town recluse, Arthur (“Boo”) Radley, was based on Lee and Capote’s childhood neighbour, Son Boulware. According to Capote, Boo “was a real man, and he lived just down the road from us.…Everything [Lee] wrote about it is absolutely true.” How did people respond to To Kill a Mockingbird? • 1.3 Jem Finch
