For Hudson, the empty nerd nostalgia that Cline’s work champions points to something toxic in nerd culture itself. “It’s a valuable question for gaming culture — and ‘nerd culture’ more generally — to ask itself,” she wrote: “Do we want to tell stories that make sense of the things we used to love, that help us remember the reasons we were so drawn to them, and create new works that inspire that level of devotion? Or do we simply want to hear the litany of our childhood repeated back to us like an endless lullaby for the rest of our lives?” • differences in resistance between conducting and insulating components (quantitative)

The cost of donating credentials is often very high to the user; in a federated access environment, the password for access to resources will most probably also be that for access to personal and financial information. There is a clear data protection law breach risk if someone passes such information to a third party without permission, and as a recent Morrisons supermarket data protection case has shown, the employer ends up with the liability for a data protection breach initiated by an employee. The website Sci-Hub, now in its sixth year of existence, provides gratis access to scholarly literature, despite the continued presence of paywalls. Sci-Hub brands itself as “the first pirate website in the world to provide mass and public access to tens of millions of research papers.” The website, started in 2011, is run by Alexandra Elbakyan, a graduate student and native of Kazakhstan who now resides in Russia ( Bohannon, 2016a; Schiermeier, 2015). Elbakyan describes herself as motivated to provide universal access to knowledge ( Elbakyan, 2016a; Elbakyan, 2015; Milova, 2017).

In 2015, Elsevier sued the piracy site AvaxHome for $37.5 million. Then, the UK-based Publishing Association, of which Elsevier was a member, and the AAP, where Elsevier was joined by closely associated publisher, the American Chemical Society ( ACS), also successfully filed an injunction against a slew of ebook pirates — including AvaxHome, LibGen, Ebookee, Freebookspot, Freshwap, Bookfi, and Bookre — mandating that ISPs block customers’ access to them. Later, it also attempted to force Cloudflare, an internet security service, to turn over logs that would identify the operators of LibGen and Bookfi. Note that these analyses do not include Sci-Hub’s access logs for 2017 ( Tzovaras, 2018), which were released on January 18, 2018. Unfortunately, at that time we had already adopted a freeze on major new analyses. Nonetheless, we did a quick analysis to assess growth in Sci-Hub downloads over time that combined the 2015–2016 and 2017 access log data ( Figure 1—figure supplement 1). Data Availability

• OpenNap The Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA), a tech nonprofit with members such as Google, Intuit, Uber, and Microsoft, even filed an amicus brief against ACS’s injunction — just as it did when Elsevier, in its case, initially attempted to get a similar injunction — urging the court to drop it.

In Ballistic, Aden is still trying to keep his identity a secret, and has joined up on a smuggling ship called the Zephyr, shipping goods to the occupied planet Gretia. The planet has become a hotbed for insurgents and revolutionaries, and Aden realizes that it could push the solar system back into another devastating war. • Seedbox

... A: The most simple result was that Sci-Hub contains 69% of all scholarly articles. We also found that the site preferentially covers articles from closed-access publishers and high-impact journals. [Editor’s Note: A breakdown can be found here.] I think it's interesting that Elsevier and the American Chemical Society had some of the highest coverage and those are the publishers that have sued Sci-Hub. Maybe they realized that basically their entire corpus was in Sci-Hub. There were a lot of journals where Sci-Hub has every single article.

• OpenNap In the previous analyses, open access status was determined at the journal level according to Scopus. This category of access is frequently referred to as “gold” open access, meaning that all articles from the journal are available gratis. However, articles in toll access journals may also be available without charge. Adopting the terminology from the recent “State of OA” study ( Piwowar et al., 2018), articles in toll access journals may be available gratis from the publisher under a license that permits use (termed “hybrid”) or with all rights reserved (termed “bronze”). Alternatively, “green” articles are paywalled on the publisher’s site, but available gratis from an open access repository (e.g. a pre- or post-print server, excluding Sci-Hub and academic social networks).

In the real world, Aech is a heavy-set African-American named Helen Harris. Helen uses a Caucasian male appearance and voice for her OASIS avatar in order to be more easily respected by her peers. Frankly, this is the sort of book where you just want more. Which is actually part of the problem. Frank Herbert ended up writing five sequels to the original novel, and since his death his son, Brian Herbert, has collaborated with Kevin J. Anderson with a whole long list of sequels and prequels. The first sequel, Dune Messiah, is the shortest and best of these; it doesn't add much to the story but it keeps up the tension and the interest. After that, the rest of the original sequence, Children of Dune, God-Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune, go downhill pretty quickly; they get longer, slower, flabbier. As for the various volumes by Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson, they are only worth reading if you are so addicted to the Dune universe that you'll take any new fix. Forget the sequels, just re-read the original novel, it's worth it.
