Upon arrival at the school, the students are sorted into one of four houses—Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin. Harry ends up in Gryffindor, and during his eventful first year at Hogwarts he becomes close friends with two other members of the house, Ron Weasley, who comes from an old wizarding family, and Hermione Granger, whose parents are Muggles (those who are not magical). Harry also finds that he has an enemy in Draco Malfoy (Slytherin). In addition, Harry’s prowess in flying on a broomstick makes him a star of Gryffindor’s Quidditch team. Hoping to get Harry and his friends into trouble, Draco tricks them into leaving their rooms one night, a violation of school rules. While trying to avoid being caught, they discover a three-headed dog guarding a trapdoor. Harry gradually comes to the conclusion that Professor Snape, who teaches Potions, dislikes him intensely and is trying to get hold of whatever is behind the trapdoor. Harry receives his father’s cloak of invisibility as a Christmas gift, and, while exploring under the cloak’s cover, he finds the Mirror of Erised, in which he can see his parents. Later, headmaster Albus Dumbledore explains that the mirror shows the viewer’s deepest desire.

to her, as long as she does not tell her teacher about it. It became clearer by the day that, as a Chinese American writer in China, I’d stepped into heavily contested territory. I often heard other writers getting branded as “pro-China” or “anti-China.” I heard countless shouting matches over what defined “the real China”: Communist repression or the new capitalism, the booming cities or the impoverished countryside. And never mind the long-standing impasse between the mainland and Taiwan, with both governments claiming to represent all of China.

Many writers compare their perceptions of To Kill a Mockingbird as adults with when they first read it as children. Mary McDonagh Murphy interviewed celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, Rosanne Cash, Tom Brokaw, and Harper's sister Alice Lee, who read the novel and compiled their impressions of it as children and adults into a book titled Scout, Atticus, and Boo. I am embarrassed to say that I have never read the original novel :( but I have seen the film, and on learning that this classic story was going to be adapted into a graphic novel format, I knew it was a must for me. Scout, Jem and Dill are fascinating yet complex characters who live in a society where racial prejudice and segregation is incredibly apparent, and where their lawyer father, Atticus, is referred to in a number of disgusting and highly-insulting ways. Honestly, their comments made my blood boil! I adored Atticus in the film, and I adored him here - he is a fine example of a respectable, intelligent and just man who treats everyone equally and sees them for who and what they are - human beings. However, I do think he was too lenient with the Ewells!! • ^ "AFI'S 100 Years... 100 Cheers" (PDF). Archived from the original (PDF) on November 22, 2009 . Retrieved June 12, 2010.

As children coming of age, Scout and Jem face hard realities and learn from them. Lee seems to examine Jem's sense of loss about how his neighbors have disappointed him more than Scout's. Jem says to their neighbor Miss Maudie the day after the trial, "It's like bein' a caterpillar wrapped in a cocoon ... I always thought Maycomb folks were the best folks in the world, least that's what they seemed like". [48] This leads him to struggle with understanding the separations of race and class. Just as the novel is an illustration of the changes Jem faces, it is also an exploration of the realities Scout must face as an atypical girl on the verge of womanhood. As one scholar writes, " To Kill a Mockingbird can be read as a feminist Bildungsroman, for Scout emerges from her childhood experiences with a clear sense of her place in her community and an awareness of her potential power as the woman she will one day be." The book is narrated by Jean Louise Finch, also known as Scout. Scout is the daughter of the respected lawyer Atticus Finch. She lives with her father and her brother Jem in Maycomb, Alabama. Scout and Jem are white and have been raised by Calpurnia, a black woman, ever since their mother died. That escape would have entailed breaking out of his cell, scaling the castle ramparts, rappelling down a 200-foot precipice to the sea, and swimming to safety. Which he did. Then he would have had to find a captain who could sneak him past the harbor night patrols and, once arrived at the haven of Sicily, he would have had to avoid the murderous bandits on the inland route to the port of Syracuse. Clearly, he couldn’t have got off the island without much plotting and the inside help of a corrupt official or two or perhaps a blind eye turned at the right moment by Fabrizio Sforza Colonna. By mid-October, he had arrived at Syracuse, about as safe — which is to say, not very — as he would ever be.

As the novel opens, Scout is both innocent and intolerant of anything new or different. Scout's innocence falls away in part because she is growing up and in part from the trial of Tom Robinson: she discovers how cruel and violent people can be. But she also learns, through Atticus's careful teaching, that the necessary response to intolerance is to try to understand its origins, to relate to people in terms of their dignity rather than their anger, and to use that foundation as a way to try to slowly change their minds.

I would have saved myself some inconvenience and Miss Caroline subsequent mortification, but it was beyond my ability to explain things as well as Atticus, so I said, “You’re shamin’ him, Miss Caroline. Walter hasn’t got a quarter at home to bring you, and you can’t use any stovewood.” Miss Caroline stood stock still, then grabbed me by the collar and hauled me back to her desk. “Jean Louise, I’ve had about enough of you this morning,” she said. “You’re starting off on the wrong foot in every way…” (Lee, 1960, p. 24) Male Main Character Mental Sex To Kill a Mockingbird isn't just Scout's coming-of-age story; it's also Jem's and Dill's. But mostly we hear about Scout. Over the course of the novel she learns to act in a more adult way, even a more ladylike way, and to see the people around her as actual human beings. And the novel is also about growing up more generally, asking an important question: Is it possible to become an adult, to join an adult community, and still keep a child's sensitivity to injustice? }, {"698":698,"699":699}]; To Kill a Mocking Bird asks serious questions of how different people in the community deal with important and difficult events that rock their lives, and call upon them to make moral decisions. This book contains a brilliant story line (complete with a fantastic ending) but also questions your own morality. It makes you feel at home within a loving family and part of a Deep South community with conflicting ideas on justice and unable to escape their past. It really is a ‘must-read’.
