• Arts & Entertainment The 1920s and 1930s saw the emergence of spoken drama. Most outstanding among playwrights of the day are Ouyang Yuqian, Hong Shen, Tian Han, and Cao Yu. [38] More popular than this Western-style drama, however, was Peking opera, raised to new artistic heights by the likes of Mei Lanfang.

When it is said that a character has a fatal flaw, the implication is that the character is perhaps admirable and successful in other ways, but there is something within his personality that will eventually lead to his downfall. The heroes of the ancient Greek dramas, for example, generally had tragic flaws. The tragic flaw is often a good trait that has turned bad as a result of being pushed to an extreme or being wrongly applied in some way. • Research Culture

The concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2) has been increasing throughout recent history. It was steady at 280ppm until the industrial revolution (Wrobelwitz et al. 2013), after which it began rising, reaching just over 400ppm currently (Block et al. 2017). This change in concentration of CO 2 is predicted to significantly impact the global environment (Fang et al. 2017). Both precipitation levels and mean temperatures are expected to change as a result of such increases (Fang et al. 2017) which, coupled with the expectation of a growing population (Challinor et al. 2014), could heavily burden the ability of the global agricultural infrastructure to provide. These sentences introduce the topic broadly, include relevant background information and explain key concepts. Show/hide comment 2 These abiotic challenges are expected to impact growth speed, quality and yield of staple crops like wheat (Wroblewitz et al. 2013). Wheat is a source of food for over 90% of the global population (Cai et al. 2016) and provides 4.5 billion people with their necessary daily protein (Dubey et al. 2014). The importance this crop holds for the global population establishes the necessity for it to be able to thrive in a future climate. These sentences provide key information that is relevant to the specific topic and explain the importance of the topic. Show/hide comment 3 Therefore, this review aims to directly assess how global wheat crops will react to a rise in environmental CO 2 and guide research of mitigation of any challenges wheat may face. This sentence states the aim (or purpose) of the literature review. Notice that the specific aim is provided after general background and relevance to topic, close to the end of the introduction. Show/hide comment 4 Firstly crop growth will be explored, then crop yield and finally yield quality within an environment of elevated CO 2. The sentence outlines the scope - the key points that will be discussed in the body of the review. The body

George Orwell: ‘Books vs. Cigarettes’ This Egyptian novel is set in an almost present-day Egypt, slightly more dystopian than reality. After a failed uprising, a sinister authority, the Gate, rises to power. The main character was shot during the uprising and is waiting for official permission to have a bullet removed; the novel is, intriguingly, structured using his medical records. My main fear about books from the Middle East is that they’ll be similar to The Kite Runner in tone, mood or style (because it’s a proven genre that sells in the Anglo world, not because all ME writing is actually like that, but this one is published by Melville House and is described as “evocative of George Orwell’s dystopias, of Kafkaesque surrealism, and of the dark satire of Sonallah Ibrahim’s ‘The Committee,” by the translator in a review at Madr Masr so it’s pretty certain to be way better than that.

Matilda is a great read-together book, but really, any of Dahl’s books, be it Matilda or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or James and the Giant Peach, deliver a delightful reading experience for parents and children alike. Dahl’s stories are hard to stop reading but easy to jump back into each night. And Dahl’s written enough books that there is something for everyone to enjoy. 17. To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf

You will triangulate methods – i.e. collect data in several different ways, and some of these data may be quantitative. You will analyse each type of data and describe this, and then write a discussion that shows how each piece of analysis contributes to the overall picture of what is going on. • Mathematics

This wouldn’t necessarily be as big of a cultural/institutional shift as it might seem on the surface. Heck, when I was in middle school in the early 80’s we still had both English and Reading classes, double “reading” blocks are pretty common today, and even among ELA teachers, there are clearly some that focus on “literacy” and others on “literature,” so splitting up between the two more formally should be a lot more doable than a lot of similar departmental reorganizations. I feel like there is no one who understands me like Lizzie Bennett. She is strong, smart, and knows what she wants. More importantly her existence made me, as a young girl, feel like maybe I could grow up to be the same. I also love the fact that despite Lizzie living in a world that just wasn't fair to women (they had to marry, they couldn't inherit, and were often regarded as silly) she never let that stop her from speaking her mind. —Ashley Perez • The Gift of Storytelling | The Family Patch on The Influence of Books on YAs

J.K. Rowling's immensely popular Harry Potter books aren't just fun for kids to read, they are also novels that can actually help improve your vocabulary. One of the great things about the language Rowling uses is that the names of spells, people, and places often stem from Latin roots and describe the very thing they're meant to name. The associations to Latin roots can help you better understand the meaning of other similar words. Ulysses 33.
