Although we include all of these types of direct and indirect interaction with the material world in this definition, it does not include student manipulation or analysis of data created by a teacher to replace or substitute for direct interaction with the material world. For example, if a physics teacher presented students with a constructed data set on the weight and required pulling force for boxes pulled across desks with different surfaces, asking the students to analyze these data, the students’ problem-solving activity would not constitute a laboratory experience according to the committee’s definition. – einpoklum Nov 20 '18 at 20:02

In August 2016, the Association of American Publishers sent a letter to Gabriel J. Gardner, a researcher at California State University who has written papers on Sci-Hub and similar sites. The letter asked Gardner to stop promoting the site, which he had discussed at a session of a meeting of the American Library Association. [68] In response the publishing institution was highly criticized for trying to silence legitimate research into the topic, and the letter has since been published in full, and responded to by the dean of library services at Cal State Long Beach, who supported Gardner's work. [69] In the context of the big deal cancellations by several library systems in the world, in 2019 the wide usage of Sci-Hub was credited as one of the factors which reduced the apparent value of the subscriptions to toll access resources. Around 1 million of these papers [were] uploaded from Sci-Hub. The other[s], as I was told, came from databases that were downloaded on the darknet.” From then on, LibGen’s database would simply be her backup.

This doesn't mean that once you've written about an article in one section of your Literature Review you can't use it again—you might find that a handful of articles appear throughout. It does mean that where possible, you should help the reader along by condensing and synthesizing literature that has commonalities. Remember, the reason you include a References page is so that the reader of your dissertation can look up articles you've cited if he or she wants to read more about it. In the case of synthesis, you are making the conscious decision to group articles around a common finding or idea. C

• The role of business ethics in the company of student’s choice This is essentially my point. Not all publishing companies are created equal, but the Sci-hub approach is that all publishers are profit-driven, knowledge gating racketeers, and so it's a moral right to put all publishing content online for free. In doing so, you're undercutting sales for all publishers, including ones like us who are mission driven and designed to publish faculty research. Given the lack of support we receive, we'll all close eventually anyway, and the profit-driven powerhouses will be all that remain.

Website Sci-Hub is a search engine that works in concert with a repository called Library Genesis (LibGen) to give researchers access to a cache of articles taken from academic journals. The repository holds over 50 million articles. In addition to drawing on the LibGen repository, Sci-Hub also uses the login credentials of university students and employees to bypass institutional authentication barriers and access journal content to which the university has licensed access.

We’ve been asked to debate the position that Sci-Hub is doing more good than harm to scholarly communication. I will argue the contrarian view — namely that Sci-Hub is doing significant harm to an already challenged market. Harm that carries long-term negative consequences that far outweigh any so-called benefits that Sci-Hub pretends to provide. • Language rules

The publisher Elsevier owns over 2,500 journals covering every conceivable facet of scientific inquiry to its name, and it wasn’t happy about either of the sites. Elsevier charges readers an average of $31.50 per paper for access; Sci-Hub and LibGen offered them for free. But even after receiving the “YOU HAVE BEEN SUED” email, Elbakyan was surprisingly relaxed. She went back to work. She was in Kazakhstan. The lawsuit was in America. She had more pressing matters to attend to, like filing assignments for her religious studies program; writing acerbic blog-style posts on the Russian clone of Facebook, called vKontakte; participating in various feminist groups online; and attempting to launch a sciencey-print T-shirt business. Granting monopoly to the publishers, who are essentially 3rd parties in the production of science, is perverse. Indeed Sci-Hub is training researchers, particularly young researchers, to expect that high-quality scholarly information is essentially free. Even more worrisome, evidence suggests that some libraries, particularly in Europe, are beginning to use the availability of pirate sites as leverage in negotiations.

Working Now-> (Updated-16.06.2020) Without a literature review, your reader has no way of knowing if your project has a solid scientific basis and justification. Especially in a research proposal, you need to make a convincing case for why your project is worth doing – that means you need to show what's missing from existing research.

The movement has also pushed many publishers to allow scientists to upload their research to Open Access repositories like — which are currently the largest legal source of Open Access papers. The movement has been so successful that even the government has shown signs of supporting it. For instance, in 2013, the Obama administration mandated that copies of research conducted through federal agencies must be uploaded to free repositories within 12 months of publishing.

ECRs elsewhere lag behind the French in their use of Sci-Hub, although they might be catching-up. Approximately one-third of our Spanish and Polish ECRs use Sci-Hub. Malaysian use is low, but the latest findings indicate growing interest. Sci-Hub users, as a proportion of the total ECR population, are lowest in the UK and US, which is in line with previous findings showing a preference for Sci-Hub outside the Anglosphere. The reason for the low use might be that US/UK university libraries are better provisioned. China, as always, is an interesting and special case, as in China Sci-Hub is banned, but still used by a few ECRs. They also have at their disposal a Sci-Hub clone, which is not banned, and provides users with access to the offerings of all the main commercial publishers for a small fee. The service is alleged to hack into publishers’ websites or steal library IDs in order to obtain access to journal papers. This access currently serves populations most deprived by the current system: Portugal, Iran, Tunisia, Greece, Chile, and 50 other counties (many underdeveloped) rank above the U.S. and U.K. in terms of Sci-Hub downloads per capita. Sci-Hub also means a future of access and reuse, where a cancer patient doesn’t have resort to piracy to learn about their disease, where large-scale text mining can uncover 21 st century cures, where permissionless innovation will unleash a Cambrian explosion in scholarly communication. Dislike Sci-Hub as you must, but do remember that it was Sci-Hub that ushered in widespread adoption of open access, the greatest advance in scholarly communication since the inception of journals over 350 years ago. If Sci-Hub really is busy hacking into universities’ IT systems to get unauthorised access to articles – which include personal data such as authors names, addresses and emails – then those organisations that are in the EU should be reporting the breaches to DP authorities. Have any of them done so? If there are no such reports then either there has been no hacking, or the Universities are breaking EU law by failing to report the breaches….. • edification
