• Boo Radley and Tom Robinson François Truffaut took on this material in 1966, and now director Ramin Bahrani has created a 2018 adaptation for HBO. This version changes Bradbury’s older, unhappily married protagonist into a much younger and virile Michael B. Jordan and adds language far saltier than the “damns” and “hells” that once got the novel in trouble with censors. Bahrani and his co-writer Amir Naderi also attempt to update the story for today’s audiences. As a result, several plot points are either modified slightly or changed beyond recognition.

Another theme is integrity. Although the majority of the people in Maycomb have a prejudice regarding race and status, Atticus stands up for what he believes in. He says more than once that he would never be able to face his kids and his town if he didn't defend Tom Robinson. Atticus's actions remind his kids and the reader that it is important to do the right thing, even when no one is looking. Sheriff Tate arrives and discovers Ewell dead from a knife wound. Atticus believes that Jem was responsible, but Tate is certain it was Boo. The sheriff decides that, to protect Boo's privacy, he will report that Ewell simply fell on his own knife during the attack. Boo asks Scout to walk him home. After she says goodbye to him at his front door, he disappears, never to be seen again by Scout. While standing on the Radley porch, Scout imagines life from Boo's perspective.

• Tom Robinson: Tom is an African-American man who is married to Helen Robinson. He is known for being kind and generous, working honestly, and helping others when he can. He lives down the road from the Ewells, and according to his testimony, he frequently helps Mayella with small chores that she usually has to do by herself while her father is away. Tom claims that Mayella invited him into the Ewell's house and then advanced upon him, kissing him and trying to get him to return her affection. Knowing the consequences of a black man kissing a white woman, Tom flees from the scene when Bob shows up, scared for his life. While it appears to the unbiased reader that Tom is innocent, in the end, he loses the trial accusing him of rape. • Published by J. B. Lippincott Company.

    • Whats Bradbury described himself as "a preventor of futures, not a predictor of them." [88] He did not believe that book burning was an inevitable part of the future; he wanted to warn against its development. [88] In a later interview, when asked if he believes that teaching Fahrenheit 451 in schools will prevent his totalitarian [2] vision of the future, Bradbury replied in the negative. Rather, he states that education must be at the kindergarten and first-grade level. If students are unable to read then, they will be unable to read Fahrenheit 451. [89]

First, I was impressed by the heft of the volume. At 273 pages, this wasn't going to be an unabridged version of the original, but it was certainly going to be more substantial than I'd expected. I was next relieved to open to the first page and see the very familiar opening lines, verbatim from the novel. Those words are set against a striking image that brings something from the end of the story right up to the beginning, for those who know the book already. So far as I can tell, all of the words in the graphic novel are directly from Lee's original (though the graphic novel does not have all the words of the novel; it is an abridgement). Fordham's note at the end of the book says that he only changed words from the book when absolutely necessary. I know the book really well, and nothing in this adaptation stood out to me as new or out of place, so he's done a great job. • Horace Gilmer

To Kill a Mockingbird is both a young girl’s coming-of-age story and a darker drama about the roots and consequences of racism and prejudice, probing how good and evil can coexist within a single community or individual. Scout’s moral education is twofold: to resist abusing others with unfounded negativity but also to persevere when these values are inevitably, and sometimes violently, subverted. Lee reportedly based the character of Atticus Finch on her father, Amasa Coleman Lee, a compassionate and dedicated lawyer. The plot of To Kill a Mockingbird was inspired in part by his unsuccessful youthful defense of two African American men convicted of murder. Criticism of the novel’s tendency to sermonize has been matched by praise of its insight and stylistic effectiveness. …which Mulligan was best remembered, To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), an acclaimed adaptation of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The director also thought that the empire line dresses were less flattering so they decided on 1797 where they could use both styles.

Scout is a young girl whose father, Atticus, is a small-town lawyer defending a black man accused of raping a white girl. While Camille mentions in the book that she became sexually active at a young age following Marian's death, the actual flashback to the gang rape she experienced at 13 was added for the TV adaptation and portrayed in a different way. Now, this most beloved and acclaimed novel is reborn for a new age as a gorgeous graphic novel. Scout, Jem, Boo Radley, Atticus Finch, and the small town of Maycomb, Alabama, are all captured in vivid and moving illustrations by artist Fred Fordham.

In The Pedestrian, Leonard Mead is harassed and detained by the city's remotely operated police cruiser (there's only one) for taking nighttime walks, something that has become extremely rare in this future-based setting: everybody else stays inside and watches television ("viewing screens"). Alone and without an alibi, Mead is taken to the "Psychiatric Center for Research on Regressive Tendencies" for his peculiar habit. Fahrenheit 451 would later echo this theme of an authoritarian society distracted by broadcast media. [44] • ^ Fletcher, Angus; Benveniste, Mike (Winter 2013). You know the one we’re talking about: the scene in which Darcy takes advantage of a beautiful summer day and a body of water to go for a quick swim, which leaves him—and his white shirt—dripping wet. The scene was one of Davies’s own invention, and wasn’t meant to be suggestive.
